Mekele is a city in northern Ethiopia and the capital of Tigray Regional State. It is located 780km north of Addis Abeba. It has an elevation of 2,084m. Mekele was founded in the 13th century and later served as the capital of Emperor Yohannes IV (1871 to1889). Within 80km of Mekele, there are over 120 rock-hewn churches, which makes Mekele a stop off point or central resting place for visitors. Mekele is also a primary transfer point for camel caravans bringing salt up from the arid lands of the Danakil Depression.
